Update

We are re-filming the bedroom scene over the weekend and hopefully the performance scene depending on how everything turns out. This is so that we are able to gain some more marks as our last bedroom scene was not stereotypical enough as we had a young couple in and old room, which didn’t look right. Our album covers has taken longer than we thought, as the ideas we have had haven’t always been as easy to do as we thought. But we do have an album cover that is finished but isn’t what we thought it would be. We still need to get some pictures of the band members for the covers but the band hasn’t been around all-together recently, hopefully we are able to take pictures on the weekend when we re-film the band scene.

location shots

These are shots of various locations that we filmed in. While filming in town and on Eton bridge we had some problems with memebers of the public getting in the way of shots however we managed to over come it.

first draft finished

Today we finished our first draft for our music video; there are a few things that we may need to change in order to get it to the high standard that we want. Our mise-en-scene, as the bedroom we have used is out of date and isn’t stereotypical of the young couple in our video. We also need to look at our performance parts throughout the video aren’t dynamic enough therefore, we need to add more dynamic shot variations and maybe add some coloured lights and smoke to liven up the performance.

Filming finished

Today we finished filming our last part of the video, we filmed the video in four parts, we did the first and last scene first then we did the third scene then today we finished the second scene, today all we have to do now is pick out the best bits of what we have filmed and then edit it and put it in the right order to finish our first draft.

Prop research

These are the sort of instruments that we need to find for our performance art in the music video, we should be able to find most of these things in our music department if not we will have to find someone who we can borrow them off.

Costume research

We think that the best sort of clothing that our band members
should where would probably be dark jeans t-shirt and trainers,
as rock bands don’t have a set type of clothing they usually
where what they tend to like. Some of the clothing that
yellowcard have worn in pictures over the time of them being around.

Target Audience

By looking at a number of reviews for Yellowcard and their albums we found that punk pop has become very mainstream genre of music. This therefore shows our trget audience as being very mainstream. As the song is punk pop our video will appeal to people of the same age as all of Yellowcards other songs. This age is generally between 15 to 20 years old. Our target audience includes both sexualities but not all ethnicities. The social class of the target audience is bigger ranging from A to D. The target audience for Yellowcard is the main audience for music. As at that young age, youths often have money for albums and for concerts. With our video we are not looking to change the target audience from one a big as they already have.

The Great Escape – Boys Like Girls

"The Great Escape" is the second single from Boys Like Girls' debut album, and is also their first single to chart on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at 23. The single has been certified Platinum by the RIAA, for selling over 1 million downloads. The music video was directed by Alan Ferguson and was filmed in January 2007. Released in late February 2007, it was added to MTV playlists and received considerable airplay on those channels. It features the band on the road, as well as in concert, while detailing the journey of a group of their fans on the way to and during their best concert.

There is lots of relevance between the lyrics and the visuals in this video. This is shown through the people in the school being restless and wanting to get out of there and go and watch the concert. It is also shown in the performance parts of the video with the crowd jumping and having a good time. The lyrics suggest wanting to escape and that is what happens when the school pupils go to the concert and have a good time.

Throughout the whole video there is a relationship between the music and the visuals with all the different cuts being in time with the music. These cuts are at a fairly high tempo as the music is quite quick. The cuts go between the narrative parts of the video to the performance based parts of the video. The pace of the video is fairly quick and this is kept consistent throughout.

The image of the band is promoted significantly throughout the video with lots of close up shots of the lip syncing and the band members playing their instruments. Also they are show to be very popular with the crowd in the concert scene. But there are also lots of shots of the narrative parts of the video.
This is a very typical music video of this genre that doesn’t challenge any generic conventions and is not a very original idea. Lots of other bands who work in the same genre have created videos along similar lines such as Kids In Glass Houses, You Me At Six and Go audio.

The Great Escape is a mixture between performance and narrative but in balance. There are shots of the band performing and there is a narrative structure, which is the school pupils wanting to get away from school and go to the concert.

In conclusion this is a fairly simple video to make that follows the fans of the band. It portrays the band how they want to be portrayed and shows them as being quite popular.

Lyrics

There's a place off Ocean Avenue
Where I used to sit and talk with you
We were both 16 and it felt so right
Sleeping all day, staying up all night
Staying up all night

There's a place on the corner of Cherry Street
We would walk on the beach in our bare feet
We were both 18 and it felt so right
Sleeping all day, staying up all night
Staying up all night

If I could find you now things would get better
We could leave this town and run forever
Let your waves crash down on me and take me away

There's a piece of you that's here with me
It's everywhere I go, it's everything I see
When I sleep, I dream and it gets me by
I can make believe that you're here tonight
That you're here tonight

If I could find you now things would get better
We could leave this town and run forever
I know somewhere, somehow we'll be together
Let your waves crash down on me and take me away

I remember the look in your eyes
When I told you that this was goodbye
You were begging me not tonight
Not here, not now
We're looking up at the same night sky
And keep pretending the sun will not rise
Be together for one more night
Somewhere, somehow

If I could find you now things would get better
We could leave this town and run forever
I know somewhere, somehow we'll be together
Let your waves crash down on me and take me away

Give Me What I Want – Kids in Glass Houses

"Give Me What I Want" is the second single by Kids in Glass Houses to be taken from the band's debut album Smart Casual. It was released on 19 May 2008. The track was originally released as "Me Me Me" in June 2007. It has since been re-recorded and renamed "Give Me What I Want" for the album Smart Casual. It has reached #62 on the UK Singles Chart. Kids in Glass Houses are a five-piece pop punk band from Cardiff, the capital of Wales. There target audience is mainly the younger generations and teenagers. The video is mainly performance based with the band performing at house parties. This would be very easy for the target audience to relate to.

There is lots of significance between the lyrics and the visuals. This is portrayed through out the whole video with the director wanting to show the band as a young, out going and care free band. The lyrics portray a very out going and fun lifestyle which is what the majority of the target audience would have. This is shown throughout the video with all the different party scenes.

Through the video there is not a real relationship with the music and the visuals as there aren’t any cuts, the camera keeps moving right and the scenes are in lots of different rooms. In the different rooms it changes from performance scenes of the band to scenes of people partying and having fun.

The image of the band is promoted significantly throughout the video with lots of close up shots of the lip syncing and the band members playing their instruments. There are also lots of shots of the band members partying and having fun. The mise-en-scene is of lots of people of similar age to the band members enjoying themselves at the house party. This is also showing very stereotypical behaviour of teenagers at a house party.

This is a very typical music video of this genre that doesn’t challenge any generic conventions and is not a very original idea. Lots of other bands who work in the same genre have created videos along similar lines such as Boys like girls, You Me At Six and Go audio.

Give Me What I Want is very much a performance video with lots of shots of the band playing and lip syncing with the lead singer. There is no narrative structure within in this video, just shots of the band performing and scenes from house partys.

In conclusion this is a very simple and easy video to make, but it portrays the band in exactly the way in which they want to be portrayed. It also targets a very small audience who would find this video very relevant to there lifestyle and would be able to associate with it.

Synopsis

The song we have chosen is called Ocean Avenue by Yellowcard. The song describes one man's struggle to find his one true love.At the start of each verse, the aim for our team is to show that the main characters are in love, Also with showing the love scenes they will be in different clothes, this indicates that they have been together for a long time.Just before the chorus the female character always disappears from the main male character. This part of the song shows that he is trying to find the one he loves so a change of pace in the visual part with more transitions to show that something is wrong. At the end, the audience finds out that the male character is only remembering his times with his girlfriend who has in fact past away. We are trying to send the message that there aren't always happy endings. With the story going on the band will also be in the video. The story cuts back to the band performing.

Textual Analysis – Kiss and Tell by You Me at Six

Kiss and Tell is the latest single to be released by the band, whose current record label is Slam Dunk records. They have only previously released 4 other singles so are generally not very well known. The genre of there music is alternative rock/pop punk and the music is aimed at a younger audience, mainly teenagers. The latest single is very similar to previous singles which have been successful for the band within there relatively small audience. The video portrays a party in which many teenagers would be able to associate with this and everything going on in the video. This is common of the pop punk/alternative rock genre.

There is a lot of relevance between the lyrics and the visuals. This is shown through the entire video with the director wanting to portray the band as being young, care free and fun loving. The song lyrics portray a very care free lifestyle that many young teenagers have and want. This is shown throughout the video by the massive house party that is going on with everybody doing things they shouldn’t and having a fun time.

Throughout the whole video there is a relationship between the music and the visuals with all the different cuts being in time with the music. These cuts are very fast paced as the music has a high tempo. Throughout the video the cuts keep going back and forth between scenes of the band playing and the band members joining in with the party and having a good time. The pace of the video is fairly quick and this is kept consistent throughout.

The image of the band is promoted significantly throughout the video with lots of close up shots of the lip syncing and the band members playing their instruments. There are also lots of shots of the band members joining in and having fun at the house party. The mise-en-scene is of lots of people of similar age to the band members enjoying themselves at the house party. This is also showing very stereotypical antics of teenagers at a house party. There are lots of shots of the band members as in other videos by You Me at Six such as save it for the bedroom.

This is a very typical music video of this genre that doesn’t challenge any generic conventions and is not a very original idea. Lots of other bands who work in the same genre have created videos along similar lines such as Boys like girls, Kids in glass houses and Go audio.

Kiss and tell is very much a performance video with lots of shots of the band playing and lip syncing with the lead singer. There is no narrative structure within in this video as it just cuts between the band playing and scenes from a house party.

In conclusion this is a very simple and easy video to make, but it portrays the band in exactly the way in which they want to be portrayed. It also targets a very small audience who would find this video very relevant to there lifestyle and would be able to associate with it.

Health and Safety

Health and safety is a very important thing to consider when producing a film, we filled in a sheet with all the different possible risks that could happen during the filming of our film, the health and safety is as important as getting the film done itself and therefore has to be done properly so that we know how to deal with problems that may occur during the filming. The first thing that we needed to know was whether we are able to film in the Windsor Great Park as we will be carrying a gun, therefore we will need permission to film and we plan on speaking with a warden to get that permission. We also need to be careful with the organs as they real and could carry any number of nasty diseseases, the best way for us to deal with this is to wear rubber gloves so that we don’t get it all over us, I think we will also bring disposable wipes and soap and water to wash our hands with after. As we have planned ahead we shouldn’t have any problems but if there are then we will have to go the right way about it and get it sorted so we can carry on with the filming.

Black Hawk Down

Black hawk down opening sequence

In the opening sequence of black hawk down there are local Somalian people treating their dead friends or family. They are shown to be very sad and scared of the situation that they are in. a Red Cross van is also shown to be helping the locals. There is also a refugee camp shown where lots of poor homeless Somalians are fighting over the food that is being distributed. They are then shot at by the local militants and some of the locals are killed by the militants, the Americans circling overhead in the helicopter want to intervene but are not allowed as they are not being shot at. This shows the harsh realities of conflicts. In the opening sequence there are no main characters introduced to the audience as the audience are being introduced to the bad situation in Somalia. There is also an establishing shot shown of the refugee camp that is from the helicopters point of view, it shows all the malnourished locals swarming to the aid trucks and the militants standing watching with machine guns. The hermeneutic code is present in the opening sequence as the audience do not know why the Somalians are dead or how they died. This makes the audience question how they died. This is used to make the audience want to continue watching the film and wanting to find out how and what killed them. The opening sequence reveals the location of the film to be a dry arid country; it shows that the country is very underdeveloped and 3rd world country with very few amenities. The main camera shots used in the opening sequence are master shots that show the surroundings and all the carnage that is happening in the surrounding areas. The editing in the opening sequence is mainly invisible editing to help the continuity of the sequence. The sound in the opening is non-diegetic music that is parallel to the situation that local people are facing. It is slow and sad emphasising the seriousness of the situation that they are facing. There is also diegetic sounds of the gunshots and the sounds of the helicopter used to enhance realism. The opening credits are presented in white text on top of the footage. The text that is used is typical of text used by the army and is quite small on the screen. There are also quotes shown in the same text such as, “only the dead have seen the end of the war”. This is a snare as it tries to send the audience down the wrong path. Also the proairetic code is presents as it shows when the Natives are speaking in the alternate language the audience starts wondering the impact or outcome of the situation and how are they relevant. There is a partial answer shown when in the refugee camp when they are getting shot at. It shows that civil war could be the cause of the deaths.

Platoon Opening Sequence

In the opening sequence of Platoon the audience are show new troops arriving in the Vietnam war zone on planes and in helicopters. These soldiers are shown to be very young, naive and innocent. As they are leaving the aircraft they see dead American soldiers in body bags getting loaded onto another plane this shows the harsh reality of war. As they walk away they pass a group of veteran soldiers who look rugged and skinny, however the new troops look immaculate. The audience is then shown a view of the jungle from above as a helicopter flies across this shows the audience where most of the fighting is going to take place. The soldiers are then shown to be walking through the jungle; they are shown to be very scared in that situation. The audience is introduced to Chris Taylor the main character in the film; he is shown to be very young and very scared as he arrives in Vietnam. He is shown to be new to the situation as he is straight out of training with no combat experience. The audience are positioned to feel sorry for him, as he has only just arrived in the war zone, is very young and very inexperienced. The opening sequence reveals that the main setting of the film is going to be the Vietnam jungle. The jungle is shown to be a very dark, scary and dangerous place with the enemy not being the only danger. The main camera shots used in the opening sequence are master shots and establishing shots. These are used to show the settings and all the different surroundings they also show all the young soldiers. The editing is mainly continuity or invisible editing this is to help all the surroundings to be shown. There is also a dissolve when they move from the airfield to the jungle. During the opening sequence there is slow, sad music playing, the music is fairly quiet. There are also diegetic sounds such as the planes and helicopters in the airfield or the sound of running water in the jungle. The producer and directors names are shown in white font on a plain black screen right at the start of the sequence along with a quote “rejoice O young man in thy youth” this is used to show how young the soldiers were. The main title of the film was then shown in green text as the pictures started along with the names of the main actors. When the soldiers are shown in the jungle the other actors names are shown in white text.

Evaluation of preliminary task

Before filming the preliminary task we made a storyboard of exactly what was going to happen during the film, the different shots we were going to use, the duration of these shots and any dialogue that was going to be said during the scene. We also looked around at different locations for filming in. We chose to shoot the scene in one of the empty classrooms at school, this is because it was easily accessible and there were lots of free classrooms around the school. The main equipment we used was the camcorders and the Mac book pros with final cut editing software to edit our films. The actual filming of the scene and the editing afterwards went well as the equipment was easy to use and the editing software was very easy to use. One difficulty we faced was that when uploading our video onto the computer the video and the sound did not run at the same time so we had to go and re-record the entire preliminary task again. Another problem that we had was that we were half way through recording a class needed to use the classroom we were in so we had to go and start again in a different classroom. My overall impression is that it went very well for the second time using the cameras and only the first time using the editing software on the Mac books. Our film looked very good after the editing and we were all very pleased with the result. We could improve it by taking more time when story boarding the film and also by taking more care when recording to maintain the rules of continuity editing. The lessons I have learnt are that it is very easy to break the 180 degree rule when film and that when doing the main task we need to take a lot of care when filming the main task. I have also learnt that a good storyboard is essential to a good film and we need to make a good storyboard for our main task.
