The Great Escape – Boys Like Girls

"The Great Escape" is the second single from Boys Like Girls' debut album, and is also their first single to chart on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at 23. The single has been certified Platinum by the RIAA, for selling over 1 million downloads. The music video was directed by Alan Ferguson and was filmed in January 2007. Released in late February 2007, it was added to MTV playlists and received considerable airplay on those channels. It features the band on the road, as well as in concert, while detailing the journey of a group of their fans on the way to and during their best concert.

There is lots of relevance between the lyrics and the visuals in this video. This is shown through the people in the school being restless and wanting to get out of there and go and watch the concert. It is also shown in the performance parts of the video with the crowd jumping and having a good time. The lyrics suggest wanting to escape and that is what happens when the school pupils go to the concert and have a good time.

Throughout the whole video there is a relationship between the music and the visuals with all the different cuts being in time with the music. These cuts are at a fairly high tempo as the music is quite quick. The cuts go between the narrative parts of the video to the performance based parts of the video. The pace of the video is fairly quick and this is kept consistent throughout.

The image of the band is promoted significantly throughout the video with lots of close up shots of the lip syncing and the band members playing their instruments. Also they are show to be very popular with the crowd in the concert scene. But there are also lots of shots of the narrative parts of the video.
This is a very typical music video of this genre that doesn’t challenge any generic conventions and is not a very original idea. Lots of other bands who work in the same genre have created videos along similar lines such as Kids In Glass Houses, You Me At Six and Go audio.

The Great Escape is a mixture between performance and narrative but in balance. There are shots of the band performing and there is a narrative structure, which is the school pupils wanting to get away from school and go to the concert.

In conclusion this is a fairly simple video to make that follows the fans of the band. It portrays the band how they want to be portrayed and shows them as being quite popular.
